Community life
Many of these Andean communities are located more than 4,000m above sea level and are isolated. As a result, access to the communities can be very difficult, especially in the rainy season, due to non-existent or poor road maintenance. Additionally, the language and cultural barrier between these Quechan-speaking villages and the Spanish-speaking towns further exacerbates the isolation and lack of support for these Peruvian-Andean people.
Although the Peruvian Economy has developed significantly over recent years, much of this effect has not been felt by those in the high-altitude communities. Many people in these communities continue to live in extreme poverty and inequalities in the country between these communities and other regions continues to grow. In 2016, 47.8% of people living in rural mountainous Peru lived in poverty compared to the 13.9% of people in the urban areas.
